Coffee Addict’s Diary

How coffee tricks our minds

I recently learned about how caffeine actually works by interrupting adenosine signalling.

Mitochondria within you cells make ATP (adenosine triphosphate), which cells then break down, releasing adenosine as a byproduct. As adenosine levels in the brain build up, that triggers the desire to rest and sleep (i.e. tiredness).

What I forgot to mention was that, when you sleep, the adenosine is recycled, making you naturally more alert in the morning.
